When spots contain pus, it can be seen just under the surface of the spot. If you want to pop a whitehead, follow these steps:

  • Clean your hands and face, and then use a tissue to gently squeeze the spot between your two index fingers.
  • Dab away any pus with the tissue, and then apply a spot treatment directly on to the affected area. Tea tree products are great for helping to stop the spread of bacteria.
  • If the spot doesn’t burst easily, leave it! Just apply these handy little patches instead.

These feel sore and swollen and can’t be squeezed, so leave them well alone! They’re usually linked to your hormones and monthly cycle — even if you haven’t started your periods yet!

  • Holding a warm face cloth against the spot might help trapped pus come to the surface. If not, apply an ice cube to reduce the swelling and redness instead.
  • Be patient! Under- the-skin spots like this are annoying, but the best thing to do is avoid prodding and poking!

When pores get clogged with dirt and oil, it can cause blackheads or spots. Some people are just more prone to them than others, but there are some things you can do to help keep them at bay…

  • Wash your face every morning and evening, especially if you wear make-up.
  • If your pores feel clogged, steam is a great way to soften build-up and help to clear them out. You can do this with an at-home facial steamer, or by holding a warm cloth over your face for 5 minutes.
  • Using an exfoliating toner will also help — just swipe it over your face after cleansing!
